he was a man of many, many talents. in vienna, around 1900, koloman moser's creative potential was unrivaled. he envisioned arts, crafts and design as an all-embracing synthesis of the arts - the "gesamtkunstwerk". today when most people talk aboutkoloman moser they tend to associate his name with being the founder of thewiener werkstã¤tte which created beautiful interior pieces such as this.however, he did so much more. his aim was to affect every aspect of lifestyle.aside from being one of the world's first graphic designers, he created bookshe created fashion, he created stained glass windows, porcelain, silverware andeverything and anything in between


basically, if you can make it and youcould do it, he did it and he did it beautifully. koloman moser started out as a painterbeing educated at the academy of fine arts in vienna and at the school ofapplied arts where he later became a teacher. together with gustav klimt and others, he co-founded the vienna secession movement. the secession building being built as its exhibition hall moser became the leading designer and an important voice in the secession's influential art journal "ver sacrum" but it is the wiener werkstã¤tte that the name of koloman moser is most closely associated with, which he co-founded together with josef hoffmann. the wiener werkstã¤tte brought together


architects and designers as a production cooperative of applied and visual artists realizing a synthesis of the arts. the idea was that everyday objects deserved the attention of artworks and that good design mustbecome the norm. the wiener werkstã¤tte was celebrated with international success. in 1907, he left the wiener werkstã¤tte anddedicated himself almost exclusively to painting. koloman moser was an extraordinary designer and a driving force in the quest for a new design. evena century later, his work remains a touchstone.
